5 MAJOR MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT LIFE IN FRANCE!
Просмотров 15 тыс.21 день назад
While the mere mention of France may evoke images of berets, fancy food, and leisurely strolls along the Seine, the reality of life in France is quite different from the clichés painted by popular imagination. Reality is nothing like what we see in the movies 99% of the time. It’s only normal, though, to not know what real life abroad is like somewhere else if we haven’t experienced it for ours...

5 Things that HELD ME BACK while learning FRENCH

The French, on the other hand, have Americans all figured out. In the French section of Quora, one Frenchman said that Americans didn't hang out their laundry to dry because they're so puritanical. This gentleman lived in Las Vegas, a well-know hotbed of Puritanism. He obviously never saw my aunt's bloomers waving in the Texas breeze for all the world to see back in the 1950s.

I'm a french who do not like most american people but i do not have any problem with american like you. You are educated. Most of american people i know are in a sort of cult for me. Starting with the pledge of allegiance in school, debt debt debt and still yelling "USA USA USA" everywhere they go.. flags everywhere, arrogance and shitty food. One time, some tourist took pictures of my wife when we were sitting at a café. They didn't ask before, they were only 2 damn metter from his face. She do not speak english but i do... and we had a little conversation. Because we're not monkey and the next step was maybe to throw my wife some peanut to eat ! who know ?

I got my French citizenship after about 10 years of residing here with a carte de séjour. I finally decided to do it so I could vote (I like representation with taxation). It didn’t cost much at all as I recall….there were lots of documents I had to provide from the US , and they all had to be recently dated which can be a pain. I did have to pay an official translator for my birth certificate ….but I was lucky enough at the time to have a colleague who could do it for me. I live in Marseille….lots of hospitals and clinics (public and private), as well as a high ratio of physicians demographically. Thus the wait time for a doctor or dentist appointment is much quicker than in a smaller town. Your advice is spot on…..and I’m sure very helpful for someone considering a move here !

As a Brit living in France, I have tried most of these foods, and I quite agree with you on the whole. I can resonate with your family's bad experience with oysters, which I detest, though in my case it was whelks on a plateau de fruits de mer (seafood platter): one of them in particular tasted absolutely vile! I'm not a fan in general of offal, except heart, and agree about the ethics of force-feeding geese, but am ashamed to admit that I do like foie gras: fortunately for my conscience, it's too outrageously expensive for my budget. As for black pudding, my husband loves the British black pudding, but detests the French version, which he finds slimy: I don't like either! And don't mention tripe, snails, or andouillette to me😝!

FYI not sure if you realize, but videos take way longer to make than the runtime. I record about a month in advance of the publish date. There's brainstorming, scripting, actually filming and then editing. I don't just decide to film on a topic on morning and spitball to the camera and hit publish. I am French and like studying cultural differences. I like vey much what you do Diane. I have a hint for the (apparently) inconsistent « pas terrible ». Meaning of Terrible in French is the same as in English for the historic and common meaning. But in the sixties, it took an other meaning ( actually the opposite) among the younger generation who wanted to confront the older generations. The patronizing moral adjective ( like in ‘You are doing a terrible mistake, son’) became a synonym of cool. ‘il est terrible, ce mec’ meant ‘ This guy is cool’. I believe that the word ‘terrific’ had a bit the same distortion in English. ´A terrific disaster’ and ‘ you look terrific, in this new dress’ are a bit different. In French the ‘cool’ meaning of ‘terrible’ is now really outdated, except in the ‘pas terrible !’ Where it survived.

I am french, and i believe that even saying that "France has a lot going for it" is optimistic. The whole world is rotting and France is no different. I only see a dark future because whe don't have options. I was always more from the right side of the political spectrum, but i am seriously thinking about voting for the communists next. We have a massive moron as minister of the economy, put in place by Macron and who claims it seems "i am going to kill the social state", since 2017... And he sure does well... We are now contaminated by the american worm of ultra liberalism (corporatism) that is making everything worse for us. Even our infrastructure is starting to crumble, because everything is privatized, and private interests care more about profits than maintaining our infrastructure at a 1st world level. This problem is even bigger than the uncontrolled, crappy, lowbrow immigration that has been seriously getting on my nerves for more than 20 years now. From far right to far left. We already know that the center is paid by bankers. What you say at the end is very true. On a personal level i absolutely can't stand egotists who are all about themselves, whorship money more than good manners, or believe that Hollywood is a great cultural boon to the world. Someone like that won't feel good here, indeed.

Idk for other French people, but I grew up with the mentality that any debt = poor. If you owe money, you own nothing. Debt must be erased as fast as possible, and you should always live within your means whenever possible. I think we don't have this "debt culture" in France, in general. Don't spend money you don't have yet.

French here About the automation of "How are you" : I feel it is a thing here in France as well. Not as much as in the US for sure, but still in a casual way. You won't experience it on formal occasions but maybe more with young people, just saying "Ca va ?" not expecting anything back and going your own way. The burger/ pizza stuff : it might be not so common here to eat it with knife and fork. Most places I've been don't even give you these when ordering. I believe it will mostly happen in "proper" restaurants where you can expect more choices on the menu than the classic fast food meals. And as pizza is now available about everywhere, you could expect to have it in your plate with a knife and a fork quite more often. Awesome channel, awesome content !

Bonjour. I'll add hotel rooms, bathrooms, shower stalls, stairs, hallways and elevators. And that's just in lodging. The RER and SCNF have smaller and fewer seats but the TGV is luxurious! We did not drive in Paris or Aix en Provence, St Remy de Provence or Villefranche sur Mer and never felt the need. We did rent a car for travel along the Cotê D'Azure from Toulon to Menton but for some reason they gave us a huge SUV-like thing that made small roads and parking difficult. Ask for the smaller car for a much easier trip.
